Household Staff Salary Guide 2026

Private household compensation is one of the most opaque markets in UHNW talent. There are no published surveys that principals can rely on. Compensation is negotiated privately, benchmarks are not shared, and most families have no frame of reference beyond what they paid their last hire. The result is that households routinely overpay for some roles and underpay for others, without knowing which.

The figures below are drawn from rouka's dataset of 200-plus verified sources including placement data from Talent Gurus, estate staffing association data, job market platforms including, and compensation surveys across the private household sector. All figures are annual USD equivalents at the senior experience level. Housing value is captured separately where applicable.

What Drives Compensation Variation

Property complexity and principal access are the two variables that move household staff compensation most reliably. A house manager running a single 8,000 square foot residence with one principal earns less than a house manager running a 25,000 square foot estate with visiting family, staff of twelve, and frequent entertaining. The title is the same. The job is not.

Compensation has moved significantly across almost every role since 2022. Estate manager salaries are up 20 to 30%. Private chefs are up 15 to 20%. Personal assistant demand is up 25 to 30%. Principals and family offices benchmarking against pre-2022 data are offering below-market packages without knowing it.

Counter-offer rates are high and rising. Multi-property estate managers face a 52% counter-offer rate. Personal assistants face 32%. Traveling chefs face 41%. Any search that does not account for counter-offer probability in the offer structure and timeline will lose candidates after weeks of process.

Housing significantly affects total compensation comparisons. A $150,000 base with a live-in apartment valued at $35,000 and meals provided is a $185,000 to $200,000 total package. Comparisons that ignore housing systematically undervalue UHNW household offers versus market.
